also I think the mafioso instinct is more to divide up territory than compete for it, the rival mafiosos are the only people who can validate their own status. in theory they’re all kinda in it together. it’s just that they’re dumb and stupid and greedy so you get feuds and wars between them too

In america it is because the neoliberal economics associated with the fusionist right were a means to maintain traditional hierarchies. That didn’t work so if you need gangster mercantilism to do it that’s fine. Free markets aren’t the important part
