Yeah. My grandma's family's farmstead predates the existence of Alberta, so they actually have (still) subsurface rights to all the minerals etc underneath it. ... but it is vanishingly rare these days and generally disappears if you sell out of the original family. You basically get topsoil.
Show PostThe Wainwright area is full of active and inactive wells and pipelines for both oil and gas. It is incredibly rare to force energy companies to deviate around a Canadian Forces Base for their infrastructure (the surface and subsurface rights are owned by different governments, after all).
Show PostLuke, as a former AER employee, I'd like to introduce you to OneStop, the incredible mapping tool that shows all the oil and gas infrastructure in the province: www.aer.ca/applications... You should be able to access a public map of the Wainwright area.
Show PostFor folks looking for more information on why/how there are active gas wells/pipelines on CFB Wainwright, here's some basic Alberta oil & gas regulatory information. tldr Alberta owns the subsurface mineral rights to the land the CFB is on, which means the CFB doesn't control if there's wells etc.
