to those coming back to this thread now: this is the article I ended up writing! birthbydrip.neocities.org/articles/qa_...
Show Postanyway just brain spilling bcs I wish I was writing that article instead of writing for my dissertation 😂
Show Postalso while 1cc-ing is classic it's really only suited for linear structure games... and so many arcade games have flat structures by comparison (esp rhythm and racing games) so it's sort of a restrictive archetype (and it's not a settled question whether it's the "best" format to follow anyway)
Show PostI do think the shmup/bmup focus sorta diminishes the highly tactile focus on electromechanical innovation that many arcade games aimed for though, bcs they're generally limited to the usual candy cab control surface. no irritating maze, no almighty human project, no prop cycle, etc.
Show Postnot that I can blame anyone really bcs we're all at least a quarter century removed from their heyday or living in countries that barely had a scene but interacting with the irl arcade community is so different than the online "purist" one. mostly bcs the irl stuff revolves around rhythm/racing lol
