Rand Wilcox has lots of papers showing that with skew/kurtosis N needs to be much larger than 30 for CLT to kick in (also see Frank’s reply above). Wilcox’s robust stats book summarises his work.

People who dislikes school mathematics often complain about 'quadratic equations' probably because it's one of the few mathsy-sounding terms they can remember. You should definitely save your ire for polynomials of degree 5 or more. Those are the real bastards.
