Fun to imagine social media without likes (or, amusingly, with delayed likes). Would it just die because that isn’t fun? Would reposts still have the same effect? Would anyone at all be here if you turned off both likes and reposts?

This may be unpopular but the companies’ bad incentives are only a secondary problem. The primary problem is the bad incentives social media creates for ALL OF US, which is why even platforms not owned by tech giants become these ideological spaces divorced from truth.

They’d all rather just scold us about how, well really Rubio is still meeting with Ukrainian officials so this is all just for show. For show? Who’s show? Who is the audience for this? Who wants to see the U.S. abandon Ukraine? I can think of exactly one person.

I screamed about this in the months leading up to Nov 2024 and everyone (people who were Biden/Harris supporters) looked at me like I was crazy. Our betrayal of Ukraine (and the West generally) was predictable. I'll never stop being mad about this.
