Godot taking the lead at GMTK after so many years is amazing and shows how great it is to have an open-source engine whose maintainers and leaders are aligned with their community. I'm really happy to see this happen! Unity's decline was entirely self-inflicted due to poor leadership and decisions.

As Godot becomes a more robust engine with more features and better performance, the reason to pay a license fee to make a game becomes more and more unreasonable. Even with UE "free until 1 mil" or whatever benchmark, why not just free and then free? Unity REALLY dropped the ball.

Well, it finally happened! After 9 years of Unity dominance, Godot was the most used game engine for GMTK Game Jam 2026 submissions. 🤖 Godot - 47% 🎮 Unity - 34% 🛠️GameMaker - 5% 🚀 Unreal Engine - 3% ✨ Other - 11%
