Very nice post. I (we) did something not too dissimilar with `jgd`. github.com/REditorSuppo... R's excellent supporting DevDesc + callbacks infra, together with the fact that you only need to handle a few basic graphics primitives, makes this a powerfully generalizable option IMO.
