One last piece of important context I forgot to add: The reason so many people are talking about Sexual Citizens is that it’s the basis of the strategic plan Cornell has presented to address sexual violence on campus.
Show PostIt is wild to me to watch Hirsch and Khan dance around fraternities in the interview I quoted. It is a tell that they’re advocating for rebuilding schools from the ground up—with the exception of frat row.
Show PostI want to be clear: it is not too late to end rape in college. And the authors are right that changing the context students interact in would help. But the changes needed aren’t about the furniture—they’re about patriarchy.
Show PostBut when that recommendation is brought to universities with adult students, schools react the same way the authors ended the book: By shrugging their shoulders and saying it’s too late to end rape in college.
Show Post(I could write another whole thread about how much the Sexual Citizenship model focuses on “risk reduction” to teach girls and women to avoid sexual assault, which we know is a failing strategy. There are better approaches to comprehensive sex ed that are more effective than what they advocate.)
