Social media and search were also both initially enormously beneficial to the public at large. They became dangerous because they are natural monopolies and serve a public utility function—but remained mostly unregulated. AI has a similar problem: without regulation, we’re fully cooked.

While I think it makes sense for everyone to be anti-data center, I think it makes sense for progressives and the left to be anti-oligarchy, rather than “anti-AI” per se. The public (and the workers) should get to decide how these AI models are developed and how they’re used.
