(It often only looks like it from a teleological perspective where we know that Britain exits the Empire at the turn of the fifth century, and even that disregards a similar, not all-that-different Brexit scenario in the third century...)

Exactly! In the specific case the original study examined the drought question only even becomes relevant if you assume that the fourth century was necessarily a more fractious period in Britain than, say, the third, and I'm not even convinced that it necessarily was...
