He related an anecdote for a long-retired-now-deceased Senator. The senator got really upset that a sandwich dripped mustard on him and told an aide that he had instructed that his sandwiched be pre-pressed.

Tom Nichols has said this on a number of occasions, that being a Senator is a really nice gig and a lot of them really don't want to go home... ever. It sounds awful to us oriented toward valuing actual service, but they apparently really are motivated that way.

I feel you. I’ve been gardening like my life depends on being able to grow cayenne peppers, and to make pickles. The problem is, they don’t go away when we are not paying attention, and making us feel overwhelmed when we do tune back in is an explicit strategy of theirs (shock and awe).
