In a conversation where I advocated for free to use public transportation, I was told it should be paid for by the people that use it. When I responded with then all roads should be toll roads, I was met with genuine anger. Literal spittle flying as they stammered in rage.

I’d take this further and argue that the marginal value of driving is provided by roads that are paid out of the general fund. If municipal roads not paid by the gas tax disappeared tomorrow, driving would be less convenient than taking the bus.
