a cool thing about indie animation is that it's expected to save the entire industry, every show has to look better than the things the fans grew up on or it's a waste of time, there's no union to be found anywhere, no budget for any of it, and asking the audience to pay anything to watch is illegal

There are so many interesting stories that are being completely left by the wayside by the new "indie wave" purely because the way that it's paid for absolutely sucks and is unstable in every way. There's a reason the giant studios can do more animation, and it's mostly about stability of income.

A side note to this thread: the streamers/studios, which can absolutely afford to develop a show from pitch to greenlight, are looking at indie animation as 1) a shortcut that shifts development costs and risk to artists and 2) to acquire the audiences that indie animators worked so hard to build.

Happy birthday to our favorite mangaka, Rumiko Takahashi! She's spent the majority of her life publishing manga every single week from Urusei Yatsura to MAO. We wish her continued health and happiness in everything she does. Happy birthday Sensei!
