I also owe @carlos-the-dwarf.bsky.social an apology for my part in this. I argued in the replies yesterday that his $500k bill was just in billing limbo and that he wasn't actually in debt, and I was wrong.

I didn't realize they had to put $30k+ on credit cards and go through a formal charity care write-off where they had to prove they didn't have the assets to pay $500k. I projected my own experience onto theirs and minimized what they went through, and I'm sorry for that.
