I should say before I drag a wonderful writer who has nothing to do with my unhinged rants into this: Hailey *inspired* this by discussing the weird interplay of horror and romance. The extrapolation is all mine.
Show PostSo essentialism and assertion are just another way of dealing with the competition. Even as it tears us apart. Even as it undoes years of being curious about how other people experience things and wanting to know. "Stay in your lane" superseded "please understand me."

It wasn't about understanding anyone or learning from anyone, it was establishing a voice and a storefront by stripmining every single aspect of who someone is as a series of AO3 tags meant to signal them to an audience.
