The threshold leads to a not insignificant number of workers artificially and intentionally throttling their output/ not taking promotions because the consequences of doing so outweigh the pay increase. It’s a daft burden on productivity that needs correcting.

People earning at this level pay a shedload of tax. So they should. But there's no reason to structure it so stupidly, in a way that discourages women in particular from returning to work. Why does someone on £100k pay a higher marginal rate than someone on £500k? It all makes no sense.
