It’s heartbreaking, but that framing does help. The way I put it was that I would like to extend the cat’s life, but not to extend his suffering.
Show PostOhhhhh that is SO hard and awful. My grandmother had lived a long, full life that was drawing to a close because that's just inevitable at some point. When it's a child, it feels grossly, horrifically unfair.
Show PostUgh, you reminded me now of a family tragedy. My husband’s cousin had a daughter with an inoperable brain tumor, at 8 years old. At some point they just told the doctors no more testing. Her days were numbered, they wanted to spend what time they had making her happy, not waiting in hospitals.
Show PostNodding to all of this, including that last sentence. One beloved cat just disappeared and never came home again, at quite an elderly age. The others were pretty clear.
Show PostAnd obviously I hope that life is longer rather than shorter, but I've never had a cat who didn't tell me clear as day the instant they were done.
