Decades-long trauma psychotherapist here. Sometimes cutting off abusive people, including parents, is necessary for psychological (and sometimes physical) survival. Guilting/shaming/judging people for having/choosing to do that is total BS, and is really about the person guilting/shaming/judging.

I've worked with a few people whose kids estranged themselves and it's wild how some parents act like they're losing a favorite toy instead of another human. Like, make it more obvious your kids are props, why don't you.
