I got to interview Gloria Steinem once--and it was because she had been the girlfriend of a man I was writing about (Mike Nichols). I was mortified; I hoped she wouldn't feel insulted. She couldn't have been more good-humored about it. What a remarkable life, what an endless legacy, what a giant.
