The big thing that still unites kids at the upper end of primary school round our way is definitely Minecraft. My eldest just started big school and has a nightly WhatsApp video chat/Minecraft session with all her pals, and my youngest and her pals are mad for it too. Both are very into MC YouTubers

But my train of thought was along the lines of...older ppl (me) might think kids have fewer shared references, but perhaps it's just fewer shared references that I ALSO had. Manga was NOT a universal when I was a kid. It was cool, sure, but not the water we swam in.
