If you want my analysis of how right-wing extremism exploits the weaknesses in American journalism, subscribe to my Stop the Presses newsletter. The weekly essay is free, but you can throw in a few bucks if you want to support the cause and get bonus features. Either way, give it a try.
Show PostI don’t understand why the NY Times let me rant against the Times on its own website. Healy seems like a sincere person, and I give him credit for making it happen. But the NY Times needs to stop pretending this is some brief detour in American politics when, in fact, a dictatorship is descending.
Show Post“Do you think that Trump is attempting to overthrow democracy?” I asked. “Because I do, and think it’s obvious that he is. And I think that the fact that mainstream media won't say it makes it more likely that it’s going to happen.”
Show PostHealy defended the NYT’s hesitancy to use the word “lie” in Trump coverage. He said frequent use of the word would change “the people’s sense of our own fairness” and ”lose the potency of the word itself.” “So you’re saying you want to retain the potency of the word ‘lie’ by not using it?” I asked.
Show PostI also found fault with the cutesy euphemisms used by Times, such as calling Trump’s authoritarianism his “expansive interpretation of presidential power” and saying his threat to seize the Panama Canal was a desire “to expand America’s footprint.”
