mid-week viewing round-up: 1) First watch: The Sleeping-Car Murders (Compartiment tueurs, 1965). An early Costa-Gavras noir courtesy of Arte, without the political dimension he brought to most of his later work. It starts off a bit like Jerzy Kawalerowicz's Night Train and becomes a whodunnit

It’s Jean-Pierre Melville’s birthday. Army of Shadows is a masterpiece about the French Resistance. The camerawork, ticking clock & Lino Ventura’s subtle performance had me enrapt during this scene when he was being held by the Nazis for interrogation. youtu.be/wViuaS5HHM8?...

Mona Fastvold's The World to Come plays like a really considered short story. It has that economy, and sharpness. It was no surprise to find that is exactly the source (by Jim Shepard). Shepard and Ron Hansen leave that imprint on screen. A film that feels like so much happens just off-screen.
