Great article. I read it while trying to make a Meren B2 deck and a B4 Rakdos, Lord of Riots. Neither is particularly easy.
Show PostGreat article. I think one thing to think about is that it doesn't behoove Wizards to change anything to help support older commanders since they want people to keep spending money on the next new, shiny, thing.
Show PostAgreed, I have technically B2 lists that are far more effective decks because of the inherent power of the commander. Meanwhile I have weaker commanders that get shunted into B3 gameplay because it needs access to a GC (for which there is no alternative) to operate. Some aren't even 5 years old.
Show PostI am cognisant of this and that's why Preston never gets played at B2 tables, it'd be disingenuous to do so. But at the same time, I feel like Old Rutstein, Lazav and Neerdiv are more akin to B2 lists I see elsewhere but end up being forced in B3 game which they can struggle in.
Show PostOlder legends suffer from not being part of the FIRE design philosophy, so need things to function - that the ardent bracket 2 crowd vilifies - in order to even match the efficacy of a modern commander. Combos, tempo, interaction, curving out, are all vilified as being "unfair".
