Toronto, yo. Tell me about single stair buildings, skylit mezzanines, on-street trash containerization, small elevators, life / safety review, windows in bathrooms, zero lot line buildings- all the things that feel seemingly perfectly impossible. 🙏

@zoecoombes.bsky.socialI wonder what this map would look like if we had more rational plumbing codes that didn’t represent such a cost barrier. Another part of this story is the cost of traditional wastewater disposal methods for non-sewered sanitation (i.e. septic tanks), which are also unviable in many areas.
Show PostIt’s an East/West divide between the pedestal and squating WC that persists today. Squatting WCs were produced in France in the mid 19th century when plumbing was still a rare luxury and predates the siphonic WC now ubiquitous in the US. They worked well and are the only early WC still common today.
Show PostYou can’t just send AHJs to see these systems in Europe because then it’s not American anymore and it doesn’t count.
Show PostJurisdictions (even those who don't write their own building codes) could also proactively issue AMMR bulletins stating that they'll allow them. Let me know if you know of any who do it.
Show PostIt'll be a few years till most places are on the 2027 code. If you you want to build one of these now, this is a decent justification for making an Alternative Means and Methods Request to do it early. Reach out to your code official and ask how it would be received! Let me know how it goes.
