Warlord closed in '86 and others closed in the years after. Commando apparently diversified into other conflicts. I suspect that the Falklands war might have been the turning point in playgrounds: taking over but not having cultural sticking power.

I have a long standing question about when kids (in the UK) stopped fighting WWII in the playgrounds. Now I'm wondering how much these were a reflection and how much a driver? (Though apparently Commando is still in print).
