And since this hasn't been well articulated or explained in either the state or the church, they'll project their own shallowness or disingenuineness onto other religious people, rather than imagining that those people have a political theology that supports rather than merely tolerates pluralism.

And in large part that would be no fault of Muslims, but would be because other persons *project onto* Muslims the disingenuine shallowness of their own religious tolerance, which is a not the positive *religious commitment to religious pluralism* that could have been articulated (but wasn't).

And to the extent that JFK's line worked for people, my guess is that it was because they were broadly familiar with catholics anyway, or were comforted by the implied privatization of religion. But to the extent that people are sadly ignorant of or unfamiliar with Islam, I'm unsure they'll buy it.
