I still wonder why they believed Dwarves inhabited Moria. Maybe the Goblins had been rooted out. Maybe. But Gandalf knew about Durin's Bane. He knew nothing had been done about the Balrog. Was he just gambling that the Balrog would be "asleep" and they would simply sneak through the mines unnoticed?

Also, watch Duck Soup. It's 93 years old and it's still the best anti-war satire ever made. It's arch and FURIOUS and wise...it came out 10 months after Hitler came to power and Mussolini took it so personally he banned it in Italy.
