@celynperdef.bsky.socialAs I recall, the Easter/Eostre idiocy, as a specific brand of these shenanigans, comes from one off-handed line from Bede about it, which Pan-Germanic nationalists took and ran with in the 1800s. And this is why, every spring, an uncharitable part of me wants to punch Jakob Grimm in the throat.
Show PostThe whole "Easter is stolen from Pagans because Eostre" thing is also *very* Anglo-centric because in every other language (afiak) it's called a variation on Pascha. It's Easter in English likely because people transferred the name because it was easier and linguistically people are usually lazy.
Show PostNo, we don’t get Easter from Eostre, and the eggs are nothing to do with paganism.
Show PostThe only mention of Eostre - the only mention! - is in the venerable bede writing 400 years after the council of nicea formalised the date of Easter, which had been celebrated for hundreds of years prior in the eastern church. Why would Syrian Christians be celebrating an Anglo-Saxon goddess?
Show PostIf I have to deal with one more person who says that Easter is a pagan holiday because of "Eostre" or some crap I'm going to lose it.
