We've arranged a society based on science and technology, in which nobody understands anything about science and technology. And this combustible mixture of ignorance and power, sooner or later, is going to blow up in our faces. ~ Carl Sagan
Show PostAnd here is my first attempt at making diagrams for both N₂ and O₂ (using spectra from the articles linked in the quoted thread). The double red lines indicate a break in the energy scale between the two lowest energy valence MOs. Unoccupied orbitals (dashed) were just randomly added.
Show PostThere are diagrams similar to this for N2, O2, and CO in the Miessler and Tarr inorganic book (which is obviously not an intro text but might be useful...)
Show PostThe linked J. Chem. Ed. article above has this diagram connecting MO diagrams of N₂ with the photoelectron spectrum which I feel should be the complete image that all students learning MO theory should see. I have never seen this idea in a intro chem textbook covering MOs.
