I really think researchers don't need universities as much as universities need researchers. Yet everything in the structure of the system points to the opposite. I often wonder how alternative science carried out for example in ONGs would work, and whether I would miss anything there.

Now, this complexity faces diminishing marginal returns. Simply, the bureaucracy leaves little time for the university's core functions: research and teaching. When is the last time you, an academic, could sit uninterrupted for a day to *just do science* as it's supposed to be done? (Me: February.)

Academia increasingly reminds me of Joseph Tainter's Collapse of Complex Societies. Universities grow increasingly complex to solve problems created by their own, or funders', bureaucratic machine. Ethical permits, security assessments, data management plans, work plans, heavy grant applications.

Jeez.
