Rick himself is a mess, the film is a war of his principles against themselves but ultimately is the choice to send Ilsa away that he knows that's what she needs? Love is not about control and ownership but the chance to let someone else come first, and he knew that.

Ilsa in particular, I can never decide who she is to Rick, I think she was real in Paris, but the moment she arrives in Casablanca she becomes more than that past self, scheming and clever, but ultimately, does she still love him? Even as her true love is Laszlo? I like to imagine so.
