We did a lesson where they did one problem out of three choices together at the board and then went back to their seats to do the other two independently. I feel like they asked more questions of each other at the boards knowing they would need to do something on their own soon.

I am very clear that students are free to use ANY math strategies to solve the problem. They do not have to use the strategy they think I want them to use. #iTeachMath

It usually comes up when they are looking for validation for their answer. When I see this, I translate it to permission to stop thinking. The proof and exploration of other solutions is often richer than the original problem.
