I was once 'ni hao'-ed at a protest for HK. When I politely said 'wow, that is very good Mandarin, now can I teach you some Cantonese which is what I speak', the French dude got big mad at me and told me he has an Asian girlfriend which apparently means he knows Chinese better than me
