My mom always said, “if you celebrate Mother’s Day, you’re 364 days short” and that’s kind of my philosophy for most kinds of appreciation. Either it’s consistent and visible throughout time, or it’s a cheap grace.

Feels icky to me coming out of church backgrounds where the pastor is a highly revered role. Appreciation days are usually for people who are taken for granted the rest of the time. Teachers. Nurses. Secretaries. It's like declaring "Boss Appreciation Month".

They kindly did it for me the first year I was here , 30 years ago (long pastorate). I didn't say anything, but I think they could sense I was not too comfortable with it. They never did it again. I know they appreciate me and I'm thankful.
