It's important to distinguish the concept of the effect of chronic stress on biological mechanisms causing physical disease from the prevalent claim that stress makes people experiencing it 'imagine' physical symptoms. The first is real and evidence based. The second is stigmatising and dismissive.

I see this repeatedly with my female colleagues. They do amazing work, often far exceeding that of their male peers, yet are neither celebrated nor promoted to the same degree. I feel morally injured just witnessing it. I cannot imagine what it feels like to experience it directly.
