what a shitty reason to have kids--so they'll live the life you want them to lead, then take care of you when you're old? again, this is why we need a robust welfare state. so the quality of your parents (or children) doesn't determine your quality of life.
Show Postthe real problem is that far too many parents consider their children (even their adult children) property, not free agents. want to know the main objection i've heard when i say i don't want kids? "But who will take care of you when you're old?!"
Show Postwhat often seems to be missing from this discourse is just how painful it is for adult children to cut off their parents. how much guilt we feel. how the decision takes a long time. how we question ourselves over and over, even after making the decision--and yet, going NC was still the best option.
