Moral of the story: If you want fewer crash deaths, target the people and institutions who can make the most substantive change. Worse than pointless, blaming individuals is a distraction. This op-ed is counterproductive garbage.

As I argued here in @fastcompany.com, when someone says “road safety is a shared responsibility,” what they’re really doing is shifting blame toward *road users*—the people with the least ability to curb crashes.

Why are US roadways so uniquely deadly? I wrote a series in Bloomberg exploring that question. A few answers: - Too many fast streets in dense neighborhoods - Uneven enforcement - Sprawl + measly trains/transit, which increase total driving - Car bloat

But regulators, carmakers, and engineers don’t want accountability for curbing crashes. They’d rather say “Road safety is EVERYONE’s responsibility” If it’s everyone’s responsibility, it’s no one’s responsibility. They can always point to someone else (usually individuals).
