    The pastor of the largest church in Texas is Joel Osteen of Lakewood Church, which is 45,000 people (and he’s never endorsed anyone for president, to my knowledge). Hamilton’s in KS is 20,000-24,000. Jeffress’ is around 16,000.

    Religion note: Trump is talking about Norman Vincent Peale here, who is one of the few faith leaders he has consistently let cited and lauded throughout his career — including pre-politics. Peale drew national backlash when he openly opposed John F. Kennedy’s election, because he was Catholic.

    Again, I cannot stress this enough: it all goes back to the fundamentalist-modernist controversy. Over and over this cycle, we’re watching a theological split that rocked American Protestantism a century ago suddenly re-litigated on our political stages.
