    another person said it best, to these people, ao3 is just another streaming service. they don't want friends, they don't want community, they want CONTENT, and they want it NOW.

    anyway i guess the point is that a huge portion, if not the majority, of ao3 readers are effectively lurker-only. they want a bedtime story every once in a while but they don't do Fandom. they don't put themselves out there, they don't join communities. they read ao3. that's it.

    i was like jesus christ okay it makes sense then why you don't treat authors like people. you don't know authors are peers! you think they want an audience when they actually want friends! the relationship to fanwork is fundamentally different!

    like i suggested that someone ask an author on their socials for a copy of a fic they wanted to read, and multiple people acted like i told them to doxx themselves. as if i told them to hunt down the author's linkedin or facebook under their real government name or something.
