Another day at @suffolkarchives.bsky.social 🥰 Did you know, the annual salary of rural Suffolk parish Overseer in 1816 was 4 guineas? This could pay for approx 80-100 loaves of bread, around 12 lbs of tea, or a rather fancy gentleman's frock coat. #Genealogy #FamilyHistory
Postu gösterWent to the ‘Witches: Suffolk’s Dark Legacy’ exhibition @suffolkarchives.bsky.social at The Hold over the weekend. Saw some familiar favourites as well as some new material, including an actual signature of M*tthew H*pkins. Definitely worth a visit! 🧙♀️🧹🌙✨
Postu gösterFound this little gem at @suffolkarchives.bsky.social today. Very interesting for all genealogists out there. Letter dated 20th Feb 1941, regarding the micro-filming of parish registers in Bury St Edmunds by the @sogorg.bsky.social It was considered vital to make copies in view of enemy action.
Postu gösterThis is wonderful! How on earth did they believe these ideas? It would have been so easy to disprove them but perhaps no one was willing to smear the blood of a white hen on their freckles and see what happened?
Postu gösterThe Suffolk Archives do some really good exhibitions and events, and this one in particular looks great! East Anglia has such a rich and horrible history of witchcraft and witch trials...
