MH professional here. Deeply agree. I loved a lot of it to be honest but had to regularly pause and deep breathe in sections of it. So disheartened that podcasters I so appreciate didn’t bring in experts to talk about this which would be most responsible with their platform.

I really really love this podcast so I am gonna be really sad if y'all don't recognize how you fucked up here and publicly address it (apologize, do an update episode, whatever). Because without that you will forever lose the trust of all us listeners who have any meaningful mental health expertise

Particularly in a healing trauma situation, CBT teaches you that your thought patterns are what’s causing your distress. You can learn to recognize these patterns very well through CBT. But I and thousands of others have found that recognizing them is not the same as healing from them.

I liked this episode even though I am one of those people for whom the book made a big impact. I was disappointed though to hear you championing CBT quite so forcefully at the end. CBT, while certainly helpful for many, is NOT the panacea you make it out to be. I think most people who got something+

it's a shame because the book sucks! there's a lot to say about how misogynist and homophobic van der kolk is, how his conclusions are not backed up by data, the impossibility of verifying anything because he uses composite characters. but the research is lacking here!
