It's All Souls Day. Do lichens have 'souls'? Why not? They must be hybrid algal_x_fungal ones, presided over by particular faeries who react to UV light. #Suffolk #lichens @aspenecology.com @britishlichensociety.org.uk A twig from my garden seen with a microscope under LED and UV light.

I was sent this specimen the other day, and fantastically it turned out to be Physcia leptalea, only the second county record, the first being in 1961. A ciliate Physcia with no soredia and usually abundant apothecia.

Looks likely, and your description fits. I have seen this very short fruiting in C. ferruginea before, on a mature oak.

Just back from an amazing @britishlichensociety.org.uk trip to NW Scotland. A few of the special lichens seen: Gyalecta foveolaris, Platismatia norvegica, Golden Specklebelly (Pseudocyphellaria citrina) and Toninia plumbina, a parasite on Pectenea plumbea. Lovely stuff!

Did a recce today for a walk I’m leading for @rbgkew.bsky.social Wakehurst volunteer guides. They particularly wanted to know what was on the introduced trees around the Elizabethan House. All the lichens I saw were common lichens of broad-leaved High Weald woodland. Lots and lots of Usnea cornuta!
