Of course, Chagall was a distinctively Jewish artist. He was also an Eastern European artist, and refusing to place him in dialogue with non-Jewish Eastern European art and culture means consenting to the right-wing nationalist framing whereby Jews are not really part of Eastern European culture.
Ver postNothing about President Trump saying protesters at his rallies are being paid by Soros or that Jews who vote for Abdul El-Sayed are bad Jews, but time to complain that Mayor Mamdani accurately described Marc Chagall as an Eastern European artist and not specifically as a Jewish artist. Pathetic.
Ver postIn 1936, Marc Chagall wrote, “Although the world views me as an ‘international’ [artist] and the French consider me to be one of their own, I think of myself as a Russian artist and take pleasure in doing so.” Was Marc Chagall being antisemitic against himself when he wrote this?
Ver postI do wish there were more focus on how the ad is not just antisemitic, but transphobic, deliberately referencing the gross "Kamala Harris is for they/them" ad from 2024, showing how this form of "America first" anti-Israel politics leads you to the Tucker Carlson right-wing rather than to the left.
Ver postThis ad is indeed, antisemitic, transphobic, and indefensible, but also, it is being run by Cenk Uygur, a known antisemitic wrecker with no link to the Abdul El-Sayed campaign. It isn't really comparable to the Ramaswamy ad, which his campaign is paying to run.
