For now, what we can say definitively is: games with AI labels are doing a lot worse on Steam than their non-AI labelled counterparts. 😌
Ver postWe don't actually know if these games would be received better if they had no label. Maybe a larger amount of games made w/ AI are, in fact, trash. Maybe there's just a way higher % of shit games bc the barrier of entry is so low now. Maybe players hate genAI. Maybe a combo.
Ver postFeels like a good time to mention that devs who put out 10+ titles have the same success rate as those releasing a first game. Aka: throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks is not a good strategy for success on Steam. My unconfirmed suspicion is that many ai-labelled games are doing just that.
Ver postat 90th percentile, games disclosing AI use made $6.2k in their first month, compared with $37.1k for games without a disclosure. About an 83% gap, even towards the more successful end of each group. However: not DISCLOSING AI =/= game made totally w/o AI. We can only track what is labelled.
Ver postThis data has been interpreted by some in a way I was surprised to see: that it's the LABEL'S fault, that it's a witchhunt. After all, it's only games with AI labels that are suffering, right!? IMO, jumping to the *label* being the problem is quite the lesson in correlation =/= causation.
