For context, in 1984, members of ILWU Local 10 refused to unload goods shipped from South Africa in solidarity with that country’s anti-apartheid movement. I wrote about that here, and also check out the work of Peter Cole who has researched that local extensively.
Ver postILWU Locals 2 and 34 organized a rally today in Oakland in solidarity with the international dockworkers' day of action against genocide and war at 113 ports in 22 countries. (It was a rally, not a work stoppage.) The pics are from Middle Harbor Shoreline Park, courtesy of a union member.
Ver postToday is the international day of dockworker action against war and genocide at 113 ports in 22 countries. A contact from Italy's Unione Sindacale di Base tells me, in that country alone, there are 100k demonstrators in the streets of Rome, 30k in Milan, 20k in Livorno, 2 million total across Italy.
Ver postDolores Huerta brought resolve, animo and power to our movement for generations. She started her career as a teacher and became an organizer and union leader after seeing students in her community arriving at school hungry. We are forever inspired by her. We will miss her. Sí, se puede! ❤️
