  Its funny how we hold up "learning" as a good thing, but if you are truly a learner, you take in new inputs and that might cause you to change your mind... a lot, which then causes those folks to appear as "always changing their minds" - the more you learn the more you should be changing your mind.

  “Contract first, then hire if we both enjoyed it” has strong pros and cons. Pro: you get to know each other in context, unlike interviewing. Con: significantly limits the pool of applicants (to people w/o jobs) and might be exploitative depending on comp.
