Just a small correction...the game takes place over 4 months. At that point Astarion would've been gone for 2 to 3 months. If Astarion is in a relationship with the PC he is pretty damn faithful, so I don't think he is secretly going out of his way to cheat on them. So it is Petras doing it.

Yes he puts on a mask at the beginning for an end goal but it’s clear that he resents himself for that
