    But I also think, in defense of my fellow countrymen, the objection to this excess specificity also maybe underrates the need for more specificity in a country roughly the size (population, land area) as the entire EU where just one dialect of one language dominates, like, 90+% of place names.

    I think this is the product of the United States having a number of cities, internally, where the 'most famous one' would be unclear, e.g. Springfield (MA? IL? MO?) and local cities named after distant famous cities (Athens, GA vs. Athens) leading to an excess of specificity.
