So, if you have: Jānis 'John' (nominative) — Jāņa (genitive) brālis 'brother' (nom) — brāļa (gen) Then it seems almost strange not to have ŗ in the corresponding kind of words: pāris 'pair' (nom) — pāŗa (gen) Māris (nom) — Māŗa (gen) Juris (nom) — Juŗa (gen) (3/7)
Ver postBut Livonian can help here. It's not possible to link to individual entries, but if you go to the dictionary (livonian.tech/meklesanas-r...), search for buŗā 'wizard', and click on the little green audio icon next to the word, you can hear different speakers say 'ŗ'. In Latvian it sounded the same.
Ver postTrimda basically translates as "exiled", so the term isn't generally used for more recent or older members of the Latvian diaspora
Ver postLatvia's diaspora is pretty massive and influential for a country of its size, so something you come across more often than you might think. Trimda latvieši's vocabulary often has a prewar vibe - e.g. using "lidlauks" (airfield/aerodrome) rather than modern "lidosta" for airport
Ver postFrom other place: Use of the letter "ŗ" in writing is an immediate giveaway of a so-called "trimda" Latvian, descendants of those who fled the Soviet occupation. Eliminated in Soviet spelling reforms in the '50s and isn't used in modern Latvian, though some claim it adds an important distinction
