So, if you have: Jānis 'John' (nominative) — Jāņa (genitive) brālis 'brother' (nom) — brāļa (gen) Then it seems almost strange not to have ŗ in the corresponding kind of words: pāris 'pair' (nom) — pāŗa (gen) Māris (nom) — Māŗa (gen) Juris (nom) — Juŗa (gen) (3/7)

But Livonian can help here. It's not possible to link to individual entries, but if you go to the dictionary (livonian.tech/meklesanas-r...), search for buŗā 'wizard', and click on the little green audio icon next to the word, you can hear different speakers say 'ŗ'. In Latvian it sounded the same.

From other place: Use of the letter "ŗ" in writing is an immediate giveaway of a so-called "trimda" Latvian, descendants of those who fled the Soviet occupation. Eliminated in Soviet spelling reforms in the '50s and isn't used in modern Latvian, though some claim it adds an important distinction
